My outfit: SHOP NOW
If you’ve seen photos of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania in the fall, you already know—it looks straight out of a Hallmark movie. 🍂 Cozy streets, charming inns, mountain views, and that iconic fall train ride that winds through colorful foliage.
So of course, we had to go see it for ourselves this year. But let’s just say… our experience wasn’t quite the peaceful small-town day trip I imagined. Between traffic, parking struggles, long lines, and crowds from the Fall Festival, it turned into quite an adventure (and a lesson learned!).
If you’re planning to visit Jim Thorpe during peak fall season, this honest review will help you know what to expect—and how to make your trip smoother than ours.
Jim Thorpe Train Ride: Our Fall Day Trip to Jim Thorpe, PA
We left our hotel around 10:30 a.m. for what was supposed to be a quick 35-minute drive to Jim Thorpe. The plan was simple: grab lunch in town, take the scenic fall foliage train ride, and explore the cute shops before heading back.
But once we were about a mile and a half away from the train station, everything came to a standstill. Traffic barely moved. It took us an entire hour just to move one mile. The roads were packed with other cars trying to get into town for the Fall Festival.
When we finally got close enough, parking became another challenge. Every lot was full, so we ended up finding a space up a hill, about a 15-minute walk from the main street. That’s fine when you’re on vacation, but when you’ve got kids and a full day ahead—it’s not ideal.
The Long Wait for Tickets
Once we reached the train station, the line for tickets was incredibly long. We arrived around 1:15 p.m. and didn’t get our tickets until after 3:00 p.m.—that’s about two hours of standing in line, and there weren’t many seats around. Everyone was just waiting on their feet under the sun, hoping the tickets wouldn’t sell out.
When we finally got our tickets, the only available time was for the 5:00 p.m. train ride, which meant more waiting. There were no clear lines or systems for boarding either. Once the train arrived, it was a bit of a free-for-all—whoever moved fastest got in first. The staff were kind and friendly, but things definitely felt unorganized. I believe it’s because it was also Fall Festival weekend, which brings extra crowds.
The Scenic Train Ride: Beautiful but Short
Once we finally boarded, the train itself was beautiful. The views were stunning—vibrant fall leaves, mountain backdrops, and that crisp autumn air that makes you forget the stress of getting there. The ride lasts about 45 minutes, which is perfect for families with kids.
It’s definitely picturesque and makes for great photos and videos (mine turned out dreamy!). But if I’m being honest, after six hours of traffic and waiting, it was hard to feel like the effort matched the experience.
Would I do it again? Probably—but I’d do it very differently next time.
What I’d Do Differently Next Time
If I could redo our Jim Thorpe trip, here’s exactly what I’d change (and what I recommend if you’re planning yours):
1. Arrive Early—Like 7:00 a.m. Early
This is my biggest tip! Jim Thorpe gets very crowded during peak fall weekends, especially in October. Getting there early means easier parking, shorter lines, and more time to explore the town before your train ride.
2. Book Train Tickets Online (If Available)
Check the official website for advance ticket sales so you don’t have to wait in long lines. If online booking isn’t an option, arrive early and make that your first stop.
3. Bring Cash
Many parking areas and food vendors only accept cash. It’s good to have small bills on hand for convenience.
4. Stay Overnight
If possible, book a night or two at one of the charming inns or B&Bs in town. That way, you can enjoy the Fall Festival without rushing or worrying about parking.
5. Explore the Town Beyond the Train Ride
Jim Thorpe has so much to offer beyond the train! You’ll find:
- 👻 Ghost Tours — spooky and fun for families with older kids
- 🛍️ Antique & Gift Shops — unique finds and local crafts
- 🍴 Restaurants & Cafés — cozy spots for hot cider or a warm meal
- 🛶 Outdoor Activities — bike rentals, kayaking, and even white water rafting
- 🎶 Live Music & Street Vendors — especially during festival weekends
6. Be Patient & Flexible
During peak season, expect crowds and lines. Bring snacks, water, and comfortable shoes, and plan your day with a little wiggle room.
The Good, the Bad, and the Memorable
Despite the long wait, we still made memories that we’ll laugh about later. The kids loved the train ride once we finally boarded, and the fall scenery really was breathtaking.
The staff were friendly and patient with the crowd, but the process could definitely be more organized—especially for families traveling with little ones.
It wasn’t the perfect trip, but it’s one of those experiences you’ll always remember, partly because of how real it was. And that’s what family travel is all about, right? Learning, laughing, and figuring out what to do differently next time.
Is the Jim Thorpe Train Ride Worth It This Fall?
If you’re local or within driving distance, I’d say yes—it’s worth doing once. The train ride is short but beautiful, and the town of Jim Thorpe itself has a timeless charm.
Just plan smart: arrive early, pack patience, and be ready to explore more than just the train. Even if your trip doesn’t go perfectly, you’ll still come home with cozy memories and maybe a few funny stories to tell.
Would we go again? Definitely—but next time, we’ll be there bright and early with coffee in hand.
Quick Tips Recap
- Arrive by 7:00 a.m. to beat the crowds
- Bring cash for parking and vendors
- Expect traffic and long lines during Fall Festival
- Book overnight stay at a local inn if you can
- Explore beyond the train — shops, food, ghost tours, outdoor fun
Final Word on the Jim Thorpe Train Ride
Even though it wasn’t the smoothest experience, there’s something about small-town fall adventures that makes them special. Jim Thorpe really does look like the “Switzerland of America,” and despite the chaos, it’s easy to see why people fall in love with it.
Sometimes the beauty makes the chaos worth it. 🍂
Simply,
Christianne
